IRA Makes Local Marine Cargo Insurance Mandatory for All Imports from July 2026
Beginning 1 July 2026, all importers into Kenya will be required to obtain Marine Cargo Insurance from locally licensed insurers before customs clearance. The new digital platform, developed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), National Treasury and Safaricom, will integrate insurance verification directly into customs processing, strengthening compliance and supporting growth in Kenya’s insurance sector.
